Giving to Boulder Day Nursery

Boulder Day Nursery envisions a center where excellent care and low-income families do not have to be mutually exclusive. A center where all children have access to a safe and loving, high quality early childhood education that includes a developmentally appropriate and culturally competent curriculum. A center with knowledgeable and well-trained teachers. A center with comprehensive services that support child health, nutrition and social well-being in an environment that respects and supports diverse backgrounds and family traditions.

Boulder Day Nursery aims to provide opportunities for parents to achieve economic self-sufficiency by providing the highest quality care to families who are least able to afford it, yet need it the most due to their socio-economic status and other risk factors. Our organizational goals are: to provide services for children to acquire new skills and concepts; to facilitate the early acquisition of literacy skills; to encourage the development of individual talents; to encourage emotional growth; to prepare children academically and emotionally for school; and to promote socialization with other children and adults.

Specifically, Boulder Day Nursery does this through:

  • Parent support programs that aid parents in recognizing and understanding a child's developmental needs and requirements for healthy growth, along with long-term and comprehensive family-support activities through the Family Resource Program, and;
  • The Early Learning Programs, which provide high quality and accessible early childhood education child care designed to help young children from low-income families develop the emotional security, social competence, and intellectual capacity they need to succeed in school, and to become healthy, happy and productive adults.

There are many environmental factors that can affect the trajectory of a child’s life from the time they’re born, to the time they turn eighteen. Quality child care is by no means a guarantee of success. But research has consistently shown that when children from low-income or at-risk families have access to high quality programs like those Boulder Day Nursery provides, they are – statistically speaking – highly likely to avoid a variety of negative outcomes such as involvement in the juvenile justice system, teen pregnancy, dropping out of high school, substance abuse, and are more likely to do better in school, go on to college and become happy and productive adults. An investment now in the young children we serve, gives “society” an average Return-On-Investment of $7 by the time they reach adulthood.

Over 90% of our families receive significant tuition subsidies from our sliding scale, and tuition fees represent less than half of our total revenue. Your contribution helps us bridge the gap between what families can afford to pay, and what it costs to provide the service.

Boulder Day Nursery is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. There are a variety of ways you can help us make a difference in a child's life, while supporting socio-economic diversity and sustainable communities.

Donations to Boulder Day Nursery are eligible for the Child Care Contribution Tax Credit. That means you'll receive a credit (much better than a deduction) equal to 50% of your donation on your Colorado income tax. A donation of $1000 gets the usual Federal tax deduction, PLUS you'll receive $500 back from the state at tax time.

Operations & Programs

This is the most direct way for your contribution to have an immediate impact. Contributions to Operations and Programs help offset the costs of professional staff salaries, and supplies such as food, formula and diapers. Contributions made in this area also provide tuition waivers and scholarships for low-income families.

Endowment

Boulder Day Nursery maintains a permanently restricted fund whose interest proceeds are dedicated to providing tuition scholarships for low-income families, as well as professional development activities for teachers. This is an excellent way to leave a permanent legacy and have a lasting impact in our community.

Capital Needs

Boulder Day Nursery built its current home in 1929 on land donated by Hannah Barker and recently finished an extensive renovation of it in 2002. Contributions made to the capital fund will help ensure that we are able to properly maintain our historic home, plan for future facility expansion, and meet the needs of Boulder's next generations.

Planned Giving and Bequests

There are many different reasons for, and benefits to, making a planned gift to Boulder Day Nursery. Each person and family is different. You might have an interest in early childhood and want to help ensure that Boulder Day Nursery stays sustainable for the long-term. You may wish to provide sufficiently for loved ones while minimizing the impact of inheiritance or captial gains tax on your estate. Or, you may want to ensure that funds will be available to meet your basic needs for the rest of your life. Whatever, your motivation, Boulder Day Nursery can help. Please contact (or have the professional helping you with the planning of your estate) contact Steve Callander for more information regarding the possibilities around bequests or life income aggreements.
